Real-world expectations
What to Expect from Smart Film at Night.
Frosted film obscures the view, but privacy depends on more than switching the power off. The room’s lighting and the distance from the glass matter.
Understand what frosted means
Standard PDLC scatters light in its frosted state. It transmits diffused light rather than behaving like an opaque wall. The outside view is obscured, and the view into the room is obscured too.
Pay attention to silhouettes
Strong backlighting or someone standing close to the pane can make shadows or silhouettes visible. That matters for bathrooms, bedrooms, changing spaces and rooms where privacy is especially sensitive. Do not treat a daytime photograph as proof of nighttime privacy.
Review the conditions that matter to you
Describe where someone could look from, where people stand inside, and which lights are used at night. Review the specified film under representative conditions. A sample or demonstration is useful only when its limits and lighting are understood.
Clear mode is a view in both directions
Clear mode allows a view through the glass. It is not a guaranteed one-way mirror. If your goal is to see outside while preventing all views inside, explain that requirement explicitly before selecting a product.
Ask about the selected system’s power-off state
Standard clear-on PDLC returns to its frosted state when power is removed. Other products can behave differently. Confirm the exact product and controller, especially where clear visibility or privacy during an outage is important.
Keep Planning
Product-specific recommendations and commercial terms must be confirmed for the actual installation.
